About Lindy Hop
What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop is an Afro-American swing dance that originated in America’s black ghettos in the late 1920s. The years up to 1946 became known as the Swing era.
Swing dancing is enjoying a popular revival throughout the U.K. Europe and America and numerous bands are emerging that are dedicated to swing music and encouraging more people to learn and enjoy the dance.
Recent films such as “Swing” starring Lisa Stansfield, “Malcolm X”, and “Stompin’ at the Savoy”, and the Broadway hit show “Swing” all include lindy hop dance choreography from the 1930s and were inspired by the current swing revival. Robbie Williams’ recent chart topping CD “Swing When You’re Winning” was based on music from the Swing Era too.
Lindy Hop is one of the most challenging forms of swing dance and involves 6 and 8-beat syncopated footwork patterns. Whist the dance originated a long time ago and is danced predominately to swing music it remains a progressive form of dance and often crosses over with street and hip hop dance music and choreography.
